MacDonalds Clan Tartan history
The MacDonalds were initially the Lords of the Isles, but they have since dispersed all over the Highlands. This enormous clan has several branches and once owned vast stretches of land. The islands of Lochaber, Skye, and Lewis, as well as Glencoe, are well-known for their connections to Clan MacDonald. Clan Macdonald of Sleat, Clan Macdonald of Clanranald, Clan MacDonell of Glengarry, Clan MacDonald of Keppoch, and Clan MacAlister are the branches of the clan that Lord Lyon currently recognizes.
Other branches, like the Clan MacDonald of Dunnyveg, Clan MacDonald of Lochalsh, the MacDonalds of Glencoe, and the MacDonalds of Ardnamurchan, have existed historically. The MacDonnells of Antrim are part of the Clan MacDonald that also stretches to Ireland, but they are not a part of the Scottish affiliations and have an Irish chief instead.
What is the origin of the name MacDonald?
The name is derived from the Scottish Gaelic word MacDhòmhnaill, which means "son of Donald" in English. Dòmhnall (Donald) Mac Raghnuill, who lived in the late medieval era, is the ancestor of Clan Donald. The words domno, which means "world," and val, which means "power" or "ruling," make up the word Dòmhnall.
Finlaggan Castle
Finlaggan Castle
The historical home of Clan Donald, also known as Clan MacDonald, is Finlaggan Castle, which is situated at Finlaggan on the Isle of Islay. The castle, also known as Eilean Mor Castle, is believed to have been constructed in the 13th century. When the Isles first rebelled against the King of Scotland, the Castle served as his residence. However, the Lord of the Isles' rule came to an end in 1493 when King James IV had him imprisoned until he passed away without having any heirs. Following this, the Castle was believed to have been destroyed sometime in the 16th century.
Crest of the McDonald Clan
MacDonalds Crest
An armored hand perched atop a coronet crown and holding a cross is seen on the MacDonald clan crest. Per Mare Per Terras, which translates to "By sea and land," is the Latin motto engraved on the crest. This clearly alludes to the size of the clan, which is the biggest among the Highland clans and controls a sizable portion of the continent from the west coast to beyond.

Plant Badge for the MacDonald Clan
MacDonald plant emblem
Common heath, sometimes known as Scottish heather, is the MacDonald plant emblem. The old Scottish word haeddre, which was in use as early as the 14th century, is assumed to be the origin of the name heather. It makes it natural that such a big plant would be linked to this extremely potent clan, as it is also known as the "flower of Scotland."
