The Isle of Skye acquired prominence as the location where Bonnie Prince Charlie took safety after the Battle of Culloden, thanks to local heroine Flora Macdonald. (There’s also the Skye Boat Song, penned by Sir Harold Edwin Boulton in the 1870s and beloved by Outlander fans.) Skye, part of the Inner Hebrides, has become a haven from the hectic pace of modern life.

The Bracken Hide Hotel, a one-of-a-kind pod hotel and Nordic sauna retreat with a wild swimming pond on the outskirts of Portree, will debut this year. Its sumptuous accommodations, which merge rustic appeal with a touch of glitter, reflect Skye’s wild environment, with views of the Cuillin Highlands or the Isle of Raasay. The Hub has a restaurant, a whiskey bar, and a screening room.

If you want something more traditional, go to Kinloch Lodge. Lord and Lady Macdonald founded it in 1972 and used it as their family house until it was taken over by their daughter Isabella Macdonald, a relation of the aforementioned Flora (whose image sits in the wood-paneled café).

Isabella and head chef Jordan Webb have revived the hotel’s seasonality and sustainability concept by using ingredients farmed in Kinloch’s polytunnels or foraged from the loch coast and forests. Visitors can learn these methods from the hotel’s ghillie, Mitchell Partridge, or go on a wildlife hunt with Skye High Wildlife’s Stewart Dawber to see deer, otters, and Golden Eagle.

Don’t forget to eat at Edinbane Lodge, which was a run-down hunting lodge until chef-patron Calum Montgomery, who was born and reared on Skye, took over five years ago with his family. It also has four guestrooms for when you’ve had your fill of hand-dived Isle of Rona scallops with smoked seaweed butter and other specialties. It was named Restaurant of the Year at the Scottish Excellence Awards in March.
