7 Top Scottish wildlife experiences for winter
Prepare to wrap up warm and search for these seven incredible animals this winter. Scotland's scenery lures many visitors during winter, and nothing beats a winter walk in the countryside. Remember to be responsible and treat nature with respect!
Stunning orcas
Travel north to Shetland this winter for your best chance of seeing an orca in the Scottish seas. During the winter months, orcas are observed almost every week in Shetland, and you may go on an exciting tour to witness a pod off the shore. Numerous excellent coastal viewing locations throughout the islands may be reached by road or foot. Shetland has become an orca hotspot, but like with any wildlife, don't be disappointed if you don't see one; it's a chance worth taking!
Cute Highland Cows
Highland Cows are easily identified by their large hairy coats and prominent horns. These large and friendly creatures are unaffected by Scotland's winter weather; they have a lengthy fringe to keep the wind and snow out of their eyes. The coat is shed in the spring to prepare for warmer weather, so catch them in winter when they are at their prettiest and hairiest. Highland cows may be seen all around Scotland; check out our article on the best spots.
Magical mountain hare
Every year, mountain hares go through an astonishing change. In the summer, their coats are grey-brown to blend in with heather moorland, and in the winter, they turn white to hide under snow. They are typically seen in the Highlands, bounding across snowy moorland in a zigzag pattern - so keep an eye out if you go for a winter walk. They can also be found on Scottish islands, such as Skye, Mull, Jura, Lewis, and Harris.
Amazing otters
Otters live in Scotland's rivers, lochs, and coastal areas, and while they can be elusive, they are beautiful to watch. Their thick fur is warm and waterproof, and they are excellent swimmers who communicate in high-pitched squeaks! Forestry and Land Scotland, a conservation charity, recommends visiting the west coast for the best possibility of sighting otter. You may visit the shores of Loch Sunart, wooded pathways on the Isle of Mull, or even Galloway Forest Park. The Shetland Islands also have a healthy otter population.
Majestic Stags
Seeing red deer in their natural environment is thrilling, especially stags with their iconic antlers. These wonderful creatures are most likely to be observed in forests throughout the winter months, with the ideal times to see them being early morning or dusk when things are quiet. There's a chance you'll see deer in any major Scottish forest, so go for a refreshing winter walk with your camera handy. Why not visit one of Scotland's great national parks, like the Cairngorms?
Wonderful wildfowl.
The sight of a gorgeous bird may brighten any chilly day! Birdwatching, sometimes known as 'birding,' has grown in popularity recently, with Scotland being a popular destination. During the Scottish winter, you can see various birds, from waxwings to pink-footed geese. Perhaps one of the most exciting is the ptarmigan, which can only be seen in the Scottish Highlands. Learn more about birding and arrange a visit.
Stunning seals
The Orkney Islands are home to an estimated 15% of the world's seal population. There's plenty of motivation to explore these intriguing islands! During the winter, grey and common seals can be seen lounging on the beach and in the ocean. Have your camera ready, but don't come too close and respect their space.
